On 3 September 1914, Benedictus XV succeeded Pius X as the Pope. This plate recognizes the work of Benedictus during the WW1 years. In contrast to the very conservative Pope Pius X, Benedictus was an innovator. He tried valiantly to end WWI and had a unique and humane approach in those turbulent 1914–1918 years. A very frail and small man, he died of pneumonia on January 22 1922. Made for the firm of M. Bup. H (unknown) and also for B. Pollman Junior in Arnhem. Model 134 with the number 120 in the series. Diameter 23.5cm. |
