GOUDA-DESIGN

Part 2 in the Jaap Gidding collection of Dennis van den Hoek and his family.

Royal connections.

When the Molyn Company (a paint, lacquer and varnish factory) wanted to have a follow-up gift to their Princess Beatrix birth plate from 1938, they asked Gidding to design one. The birth plate for Princess Irene was commissioned at the Porceleyne Fles in Delft and cost Molyn 8 Dutch Guilders per plate.

This plate is No. 26 from 80 issues and was made by De Porceleyne Fles. The "Aangeboden door N.V. Molyn & Co." translates to "Presented by N.V. Molyn & Co."

Design signature for Jaap Gidding (ontw. JG.).

Painted by H.J.A. Weinberg - 'HW' initials.

Date 1939 - 'BI' year code.

191 is a factory trace number.

18.0cm diameter.

The second wall plate is also a birth plate for Princess Irene, daughter of (then still) Princess Juliana of Orange. When in 1947 the fourth daughter was born, there were four wall plates made - each for every Princess. These were numbered issues from the Goedewaagen factory and don't have a design signature of Gidding on them. All four plates are from 1947 (so the year on the first three aren't actually the release years!). When put side to side you can see that Gidding used the Porceleyne Fles design from 1939 and made some small modifications but overall it's the same design. Attentive viewers will notice that the plate shown does have a design signature and doesn't have an issue number - see next plate.

The JB plate is to commemorate the 12.5 year wedding anniversary of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard. The 'J' and 'B' in the centre of the plate are their initials. This plate is not a single release but one from a set of five. Together with the four Princess plates from 1947 they were issued as a set of five, simply with the factory name and design signature of Jaap Gidding. So without issue number and with design signature, the Princess plates are from 1949 from the set of five.

The year 1953 was important for the Molyn Company. Together with their 125th anniversary (see part 1) they also received the Royal approval. They had this plate designed by Gidding and it was made by the Goedewaagen factory in Gouda.

In 1948 two important royal events would occur. Firstly Queen Wilhelmina would have the 50th anniversary of her succession to the throne. Secondly she would stand down on the same day/date. These events were both memorable enough to make a commemorative plate. This plate is for her 50 years on the throne.
Two things to point out - firstly Gidding has the wrong date designed for the plate! It should be September 6 1948 not August 31. The August 31 date is her birthday.

On this plate is also the funny side to be seen of Gidding. Every now and then you will find in his designs a 'funny spot' as I call it. In this plate he created a small face in the bottom centre of the plate!

The plate was commissioned by the 'Ten Cate' factory (a textile & weaving factory) in Almelo.
